John R. Thornbury M.D.
3/16/1929 - 7/3/2017 Longmont, Colorado - Surrounded by family and love, John "Jack" R. Thornbury, M.D., transitioned from this world to the next at sunset on July 3, 2017 at his home in Longmont, Colorado. Born March 16, 1929 to Purla Lee and Gertrude Thornbury in Cleveland, he was raised in Columbus, graduating from Bexley High School, then Miami University, and The Ohio State University medical school. He married his wife of 62 years, Julia McGregor, R.N., Ph.D. of Caldwell, Ohio, on March 20, 1955. They raised two children, Lee Allison and John McGregor. After two years of active duty at Malmstrom AFB in Montana, Jack completed his radiology residency at the U. of Iowa in 1961. Thus began his full-time academic radiology career that took him to the medical schools for the Universities of Colorado, Iowa, Washington, Michigan, New Mexico, Rochester, and Wisconsin. He was a founder of the subspecialty genitourinary radiology, which he helped bring to worldwide recognition in the 1970s. Jack published three books, including Decision Making in Imaging, almost 100 peer-reviewed papers, and dozens of chapters and abstracts. He served on the editorial board for several professional journals, including as a reviewer for the New England Journal of Medicine. Jack served as a consultant to the World Health Organization, Australia, and the Netherlands, and enjoyed additional international travels to China, Russia, and throughout Europe. Jack enjoyed national leadership roles in radiology, including as a Fellow, American College of Radiology. Jack was honored to receive the American Roentgen Ray Society Caldwell Medal, American Board of Radiology Distinguished Service Award, The Ohio State University College of Medicine Alumni Achievement Award, and Gold Medals from the Association of University Radiologists and the Society of Uroradiology. His favorite avocations were downhill skiing and fly fishing in the Rockies. Jack will be deeply missed by his wife, Julia; his daughter, Lee Allison Thornbury; his son, John (Amy Tryon) Thornbury; granddaughters Meg and Cate Thornbury; his brother Tom (Lorene) Thornbury; his brothers-in-law James McGregor and Don Williams; his devoted caregiver Brittany Mosqueda; four nieces, three nephews, two grandnieces, five grandnephews, along with cherished friends and colleagues around the world. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 29 at 11 am at St. Mary Magdalene Episcopal Church in Boulder.
