John Alan Stratton, 86, of Santa Rosa Beach, passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side early Friday morning. He was born June 6, 1930, in Camden, New Jersey, the son of Carl and Ella Stratton. John was a graduate of Collingswood High School in Collingswood, New Jersey, served in the U.S. Army, and earned his bachelor's degree from Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a registered mechanical engineer in 49 of the 50 states. As Vice President of HBE Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri, John was involved in the construction of hospitals, medical office buildings, and hotels throughout the United States. Always concerned about and active in his community, he was elected to serve on two school boards in both New Jersey and Pennsylvania. John was also elected to the Board of Aldermen in Lake Saint Louis, Missouri. An advocate for peace during the tumultuous 60's and early 70's, he was elected as a delegate to the 1972 Democratic National Convention. John was an avid competitive sailor, racing one-design sailboats throughout the east coast and midwest. He spent his retirement sailing on the Choctawhatchee Bay, spending time with his beloved children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and cheering for South Walton High School Seahawks athletes. He is preceded in death by his mother, Ella Ellridge; father, Carl Stratton; brother, Harry Stratton; sister, Laura Husted; sister, Gertrude Finney; and son, Richard Carl Stratton. John is survived by his wife of forty years, Barbara Ann Stratton; daughters, Sandra Gonzalez and Janet Stein; sons, Alan Stratton and Michael Stratton; sons-in-law, Jojo Gonzalez and Thomas Stein; daughter-in-law Jenifer Stratton; grandchildren, Tommy Stein and wife Patricia Stein, Sarah Stein, Isaac Stein, Brooklyn Stratton, Brycen Stratton, Maya Gonzalez, Zoe Stratton, and Samantha Stratton; great-grandchildren, Kato Stein, Judah Bears, and Naali Stein. Special thanks to caregivers from Amedisys and Emerald Coast Hospice, Alan Stratton, Tom and Janet Stratton, Maria Uribe, and Malini Wijesinghe. A Celebration of Life will be held at 4 p.m., Tuesday, October 18, 2016, at The Chapel at Crosspoint, 1477 S Co Hwy 393, Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. Floral arrangements are being accepted.
