RANDALL John Charles Randall 2-10-1927 - 2-9-2017 One day shy of his 90th birthday, our most wonderful and ever likeable father, John Charles Randall, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2017 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Jacksonville, Florida. A man never short on words, John grew up in Elk Rapids, Michigan on his parent's cherry orchard farm, located a short distance from where he will spend eternity at Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids. John passed away after a yearlong battle with cancer. To say his life was full is an understatement, John dove head first into everything he attempted. From caddying at the Elk Rapids Golf Club near Traverse City, Michigan (where his love of golf blossomed) to becoming an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America during his teen years. He was eventually presented the prestigious Silver Beaver award for his work and efforts on behalf of young men in scouting in the Chicago area. After attending Elk Rapids High School, he entered the US Navy (1944-1946), and was stationed at Great Lakes Naval installation. In 1947, he met and courted Mary Lee Struble of Traverse City, whom he married in June 1948. Soon after they moved to East Lansing, Michigan where John attended Michigan State College on the GI Bill. During their time in East Lansing, they welcomed two sons, Gregory Charles and Gary Lee. In 1952, John began a journalism career in Chicago at Advertising Age magazine and welcomed two more children, Anna Marie and Geoffrey James, and settled in Park Forest, Illinois and later Chicago Heights, Illinois. The quintessential entrepreneur, he forged business relationships in the manufacturing industry as a sales representative. This eventually developed into a new career when he opened Kelran Corporation, a sheet metal printing business in Harvey, Illinois in the mid 1960's. During this time John and Mary welcomed a late edition to the family, Janet Mary in 1963. In the late sixties, with an established and flourishing business, John began a second career dedicated to his love of golf. He was invited to serve as a Director of the Chicago District Golf Association (CDGA), overseeing the junior golf program and tournament schedule. While serving the CDGA during the 1980's, he was introduced to and asked to serve as a rules officiate the Chicago Open, a mini tour event of the Tournament Players Association Tour (TPA Tour), now the Web.com tour. He was then invited in 1987 to the home office of the TPA Tour in Jacksonville, Florida to operate the TPA Tour. He began 1st Coast Golf Promotions, all which he owned and operated from 1991 through 2013. He eventually ran over 1,200 tournaments in the region. John was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Mary Lee, in 1993 and son Gary Lee in 2012. John is survived by children, Gregory (Bonnie Davis) of Walnut Creek, CA, Anna of Menlo Park, CA, Geoffrey of Big Lake, MN and Janet of Austin, TX. He is blessed to have 5 wonderful grandchildren; Derek (Melissa) Randall of Joliet, IL, Samantha (Philip) Nelson of Union, IA, Rebecca (Raymond) Davis of Clarksville, TN, Toshia Kenyon and Kayla Kenyon of Big Lake, MN. John leaves a third generation legacy of 3 great grandchildren; Dalila Mosher (Toshia), and twins, Gavin and Sully (Derek). In 1995 he married Nancy Jane Wicks (Smith) and they spent 20 wonderful years together. No funeral services will be held. A family burial will be in Elk Rapids, Michigan at a later date.
