MAYTUM, CAPTAIN JOHN F. USMM, RET. of Warwick passed away peacefully on October 15, 2016 at RIH after a brief illness. John was married for 60 years to his beloved wife Nancy (Craven). He was the son of the late Eileen (Fowler) Maytum and Charles Maytum. He was the brother of Jane Nelson and the late Charles Maytum. He is survived by his children, Monica (Lawrence) Kunkel, Justin (Kristen) Maytum, Jennifer Maytum Hartley, and Ethan D. Maytum. He leaves 10 grandchildren: Caitlin, Emily and Grace Kunkel, Heather Bryant, Levi, Salem, Celeste and Isaac Hartley and Callan and Caleb Maytum. John was a Korean War veteran, having served in the United States Marine Corps from December 4, 1950 to May 6, 1952, attaining the rank of Corporal and receiving the Korean Service Medal with the U.N. ribbon. John was employed in the maritime industry for 42 years, beginning in 1956. He started as an Ordinary Seaman and worked his way up through the hawespipe to the rank of Captain. He sailed on barges, tugs, dry cargo vessels, tankers and RO/RO vessels. His last command was of the M/V 2nd Lt. John P. Bobo, a maritime prepositioning ship, which he captained for over 13 years. John graduated from LaSalle Academy in Providence, Class of 1949, and attended Providence College. John was an avid collector, especially of stamps and baseball cards. He was an excellent poker player, and enjoyed going to the casino to play in tournaments. Service and burial will be private, per John's expressed wishes.
