John David Kinkel Ph.D.
KINKEL, John David, Ph.D. October 17, 2016. Age 75. Beloved husband of Norma for 37 years. Loving father of Jonathan J. Kinkel (Nichole Mahnert) and Danielle Kinkel (Benjamin Wang). Proud and loving grandfather of Xiomara Kinkel and Oliver Wang. Dear brother of Jane Clark. Dr. Kinkel was a well respected professor of sociology and a scholar of early Christianity. After attending St. Lawrence Seminary in Mt. Calvary, WI, Dr. Kinkel was with the Capuchin Order for some 20 years until 1979. He earned his Master's degrees at Marquette University and Wayne State University and his doctoral degree at The Ohio State University; Dr. Kinkel taught at several universities including Wayne State University, University of Michigan, and Oakland University; his work was published several times. His children fondly recall the enthusiasm with which he attended or planned the many sporting events, recitals, and public performances of their childhood. Dr. Kinkel will be remembered for the loving care he showed for animals and especially the family's three dogsâ€”Thunder, Jack, and Wally.
For more than a decade, Dr. Kinkel was also a devoted volunteer at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, primarily tutoring young children; memorial contributions in his honor to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen are appreciated (https://www.cskdetroit.org/online-donations). A memorial Mass will be said November 26 at 11 a.m. at the St. Bonaventure Monastery, 1820 Mt. Elliot Street, Detroit, MI 48207.
