John Mason Moody Gregory III
John Mason Moody Gregory, III Richmond, VA Gregory, III, John Mason Moody, 74 of Richmond, Va., passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2016. He was preceded in death by his parents, Katherine Jamieson Gregory and John Mason Moody Gregory, Jr. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Frances Davis Gregory; sons, George Yelverton and Geoffrey Yelverton (Paula); granddaughter, Ashley Yelverton; grandson, Grayson Yelverton; brother, Andrew Jamieson Gregory (Hennie); and other loving family members. John graduated from Virginia Episcopal High School, and then attended Elon College. He started his career in 1964 as a Tobacconist in Wilson, NC, with the Imperial Tobacco Company, where his father was president. John was the Assistant Vice President of International Sales when he left Imperial in June 1977 to join Universal Leaf Tobacco Company in Richmond, Va. He joined Universal Leaf Tobacco Company as an Assistant Vice President in the Sales Department on June 15, 1977, was promoted to Vice President in 1982, then Senior Vice President, heading up the Phillip Morris account in 1987. He was a key contributor to the success of the company until he retired in 2002 after 25 years of dedicated service. John was a member of the Country Club of Virginia; he was on the Board of the Society for the Prevention of Blindness and President of LTEA (Leaf Tobacco Exporters Association). He was a member and frequent visitor of Gregory's Pond and enjoyed going to the Greenbrier, where he would play, and usually win, a round of golf; it was there where he won a golf game against Sam Snead. John was a direct descendant of two Presidents, William Henry Harrison and Benjamin Harrison. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 pm on Tuesday, October 18 at Bliley's – Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., Richmond, VA 23230, where a funeral ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2016. Interment will follow in Hollywood Cemetery. Flowers are welcome, or memorial contributions may be made to Duke University, www.duke.edu , or a charity of your choice.
