In memory of
John J. DeMeritt
John J. DeMeritt, a longtime resident of Belmont, passed away on April 1, 2017. Beloved husband to Peg for 53 years after meeting her on the first Boston University Alumni trip to Bermuda. He is survived by Peg, as well as a son, Doug and his wife, Diane, of Bellingham MA, and a daughter, Judy, of Turlock CA. John also leaves two grandsons, David and Jack John graduated from Belmont High School in 1952. He served in the Army at Fort Hamilton in N.Y. He later went on to graduate from Boston University in 1966. He worked in the field of computer technology for over 50 years, including BF Goodrich, Philip Hankins Inc., Wang Labs, Westinghouse, AVCO and Textron. John retired from the Federal Government Department of Transportation. He was active in Belmont for many years as a town meeting member and member of the first Board of Appeals. He was a past chairman of J. Watson Flett's famous Belmont Citizen's Committee, and was involved with local Boy Scout Troop 304. He enjoyed boating with his family for many years on the Bayscaper along the New England coast. "It was like tearing up $1, 000 bills in a cold shower!" John was a former treasurer of the Charles River Yacht Club and past commodore of the Sandwich Yacht Club. In his retirement, John still loved computers and was never far from one. He participated in many computer groups over the past 40 years, and even showed up to meetings a week ahead of schedule. Before websites and computer mailing lists were commonplace, he volunteered to create and maintain them for organizations with which he was affiliated. John was known to his family as the "disgruntled traveler" always complaining about going on trips but thoroughly enjoying seeing new places and the animals along the way. In recent years, he looked forward to his computer meetings, the Arlington Retired Men's Club meetings and going on day trips with them and with the Belmont Senior Center. He enjoyed a good game of bridge, a good book, reading the news from around the world, following local and national politics, doing his weekly "Doom and Gloom Financial Report" and enjoying his "3 squares." Until recently, he had spent the winters in Delray Beach, Florida. John traveled across the country and throughout the Pacific coast from California to Vancouver and Alaska. He also visited Costa Rica, the Caribbean, England, Scotland, Switzerland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI. His family and friends will miss him dearly. Visiting hours in the Brown & Hickey Funeral Home, 36 Trapelo Road, Belmont on Wednesday, April 5th, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held in the Belmont-Watertown United Methodist Church, 421 Common Street Belmont on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Relatives and friends invited.
