John E. D'Anieri
John E. D'Anieri, 85, died October 10th, 2016 at his home at Piper Shores after a short illness. Born in Brooklyn, NY May 4, 1931, the son of John and Caroline (Traina) D'Anieri, Mr. D'Anieri graduated from St. Athanasius Parochial School in Brooklyn, Xavier High School in Manhattan and the University of Notre Dame in 1953 with a degree in chemical engineering. Upon graduation from Notre Dame, he was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy and served on active duty as an engineering and damage control officer aboard the USS Botetourt with the Amphibious Force of the Atlantic Fleet. He was released from active duty in 1956 as a lieutenant (junior grade). After his naval service he joined the General Electric Company in 1956 as an engineering trainee. He took a permanent position with GE at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Niskayuna, NY in 1957, where he served in various engineering and management positions involving the development and manufacture of nuclear reactors for the Navy. He retired in 1991, having worked on reactors for Nimitz Class aircraft carriers, Virginia Class cruisers and Los Angeles Class submarines. He took great pride in his naval service as both an officer and a civilian. In 1959 he married the former Mary Rae Thompson of South Portland. They raised five children. He served as a member of the Board of Education of the Niskayuna Central School District from 1978 to 1980. After his retirement he became an accomplished genealogist, serving for 13 years as a volunteer librarian at the Mormon Family History Center in Loudonville, NY. He also wrote two books and numerous journal articles on the history of his and his wife's family, the most recent of which was published in 2012. In 2008 he and his wife returned to South Portland. They moved to their final residence at Piper Shores in 2011. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Rae; daughter, Margaret D'Anieri and husband, Chester Bowling of Wellington, Ohio,; sons, John D'Anieri and wife, Malia Haddock of Arrowsic, ME, Peter D'Anieri and wife, Julie Koeninger of Wellesley, MA, Paul D'Anieri and wife, Laura of Riverside, CA, and Philip D'Anieri and wife, Alicia Farmer of Ann Arbor, MI; and 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 p.m. Friday, October 14, at St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church, 8 Two Lights Road, Cape Elizabeth, ME. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Orono, ME. Services under the guidance of Hobbs Funeral Home.
