JW was born in Caldwell (Burleson County) Texas to Jimmie and Lillian Cooper on August 29, 1937. He attended Freeman High School and later continued his education at Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas where he studied Culinary Arts. JW moved to Andrews, Texas and was later drafted into the United States Army and served for two years. After his discharge from the military, he moved to Midland, Texas where he met and later married Lizzie in August 1965. He joined Macedonia Baptist Church in 1966 under the leadership of Reverend Horace Doyle. JW was a faithful member until his death and served his church in many capacities. He was a deacon, Sunday school teacher, brotherhood teacher, and he served as a senior member and treasurer of the user board. He was also on the kitchen committee and delivered meals or the sick and shut in members of Macedonia Baptist Church. JW also made private donations for the children of Macedonia to attend church congress. He didn't stop there. He served as mentor to the youth boys of Macedonia by taking them on fishing trips and to the Buffalo Soldiers Museum. JW was not only active in his church but also within his community. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and served on the Midland Memorial Hospital board, Midland College Board of Trustees, Community State Bank Board, and was a chaplain for the DAV of Midland. He was an active member Tall City Lions Club of Midland, Texas. JW worked in the insurance industry for over 40 years and he enjoyed family time, fishing, and sports. He was a true Dallas Cowboys fan. He was preceded in death by his father, Jimmie Cooper, Sr.; mother, Lillian Gaines Cooper; stepmother, Della Cooper; and brother, Jimmie Cooper, Jr. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 51 years, Lizzie Cooper; his brother, Fred Cooper (Barbara) of Houston, Texas; two nieces, Freya Cooper Gray (Myron) of Atlanta, Georgia and Letitia Cooper of Houston; one nephew, Lee Farr (Disa) of Houston; three sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; one son, Jeffrey; and host of other relatives and friends that will miss him dearly. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Macedonia Baptist Church. The Reverend Woodrow Wilson Bailey III will be officiating; interment will be at Resthaven Memorial Park under the direction of Thomas Funeral Home.
