John Darby Chambers Redding, CA John Darby Chambers, known to his friends as Darb, died April 6, 2017 in Redding, CA, after an eight month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 77. An accomplished publisher, editor, college instructor and writer of numerous articles on topics ranging from ocean shipping to mall sprawl, John was also the author of several highly regarded books. Those works included, Conversations with Eternity: The Forgotten Masterpiece of Victor Hugo (New Paradigm Books, 1998), The Secret Life of Genius: How 24 Great Men and Women Were Touched by Spiritual Worlds (June 2009) and the forthcoming The Metaphysical World of Isaac Newton, to be published by Inner Traditions Bear & Co. of Rochester, VT. John was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia to the late Robert Chambers and Grace (Fraser) Chambers. He received a BA Honors in English from Dalhousie University, a Masters of Arts in English from the University of Toronto and spent three years at the University of Paris. He became a full-time English instructor at Dawson College, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and afterwards was hired by McGraw-Hill in New York City as an assistant editor for the company's first public-private venture, the Product Information Network. He later became managing editor at International Thomson Publishing, also in New York City. John was known and loved by his family and friends as a kind and gentle soul and was admired for his thoughtfulness and intelligence as well as for his openness and special ability to explore deeply the hidden dimensions of human life and the larger universe we all inhabit. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. John leaves his wife of 40 years, Judy, their son Joshua and their granddaughter Jolie Soleil. Other survivors include his sister, Penny Annand of Ottawa, Canada, sister-in-law Anita Chambers, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Robert. Donations may be directed to any charity of your choice.
