In memory of
DR. JOHN CARLO
Dr. John M. Carlo Oral surgeon, Air Force veteran, devoted Pop-Pop Dr. John M. Carlo passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on Feb. 23, 2018, while on vacation in Bonaire. He was born Jan. 11, 1945, to John and Vita Carlo. Raised in Brooklyn in his grandparents' home, John lived there along with his younger brother, Robert, who passed in 2001. After graduating from St. Frances Prep, John married Mary Ann McEwan, from Bay Ridge, on Aug. 26,1966. They moved to Philadelphia, where John attended Temple University Dental School. After completing his degree, John enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at various Air Force bases in California and Illinois. After completion of his military service, John and Mary Ann moved to Staten Island. He then completed fellowship training in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Lincoln Hospital. He went on to establish a successful oral surgery practice in Staten Island, where he touched the lives of many of its residents. John and Mary Ann had a daughter, Jocelyn, on Nov. 21, 1974. They saw their daughter build a successful practice in obstetrics and gynecology at the Jersey Shore, where she works and lives with her husband, Scott Goldberg, M.D., and daughter, Samantha, now nine years old. John lost the love of his life, Mary Ann, on July 19, 2011, after 44 years of marriage. John provided a memorable and moving eulogy at her Funeral Mass. In the seven years since Mary Ann's passing, John most enjoyed spending time with his beautiful granddaughter, Samantha. Samantha will miss their special adventures of "Captain Pop-Pop and Sammy," but will carry on his love of the ocean and his passion for adventure. When not with his family John filled his days fishing, boating, scuba diving and traveling. He passed in Bonaire, a place he and Mary Ann traveled to frequently. Mary Ann's ashes have already been spread in the Netherlands Antilles and now John will be joining her. A memorial will be held Saturday, March 17, 2018, from 1 to 6 p.m., at 306 Flagg Place, Staten Island, N.Y.
