John Alford Briggs Jr.
John Alford Briggs, Jr., son of John Alford Briggs and Bernice Olefena Briggs, born on May 20, 1940 in Chicago, Ill, passed away the morning of October 10, 2016, at the age of 76. John left behind his wife Karen, children David Briggs, John Wordlaw, Chris Wordlaw, and Nicole Beasley and seven grandchildren, a beloved sister, a niece and many members of the extended Briggs family. John worked for the State of California, Department of General Services until retiring in 2005. In the last two decades of his life, John fell in love with Buddhism. He attended many retreats and practice periods in the extended community of the San Francisco Zen Center. In his last years, he made a strong effort to do the work of a bodhisattva, offering his service to Alcoholics Anonymous, Meals on Wheels, Sutter hospice, Sacramento Buddhist Meditation Group, Valley Streams Zen sangha and the Folsom prison sangha. In 2014 he was ordained as a priest in the Soto Zen tradition by his teacher Edward Espe Brown. John was a most reliable, knowledgeable, and curious man. He loved beauty, good writing, great food, and genuine people. He was a sophisticated guy, as comfortable in a funny hat at a granddaughter's tea party, sitting zazen in a temple, or traveling in a foreign land. John's gentle kindness, dry humor, generosity and considerateness will be greatly missed. May he feel the universe's loving embrace.
