In memory of
John Herbert Brandau
John H. Brandau, 73, of Ten Mile, died peacefully early Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016, after fighting melanoma cancer for the past two years. John was born in Columbus, Ohio, on April 10, 1943, to Leland and Faith Burgstahler Brandau. John graduated from Sterling Township High School in 1961, and received a business degree from Pfeiffer College in 1966 and his master's degree in international marketing from Northern Illinois University in 1968. John married Sandra Vogel from Sterling, Ill. in 1962. John's career developed with Northern Illinois Gas Company and W.W. Grainger in the 1960s. In 1984 John moved to Lake Tahoe, where he fulfilled a lifelong dream of opening his own business, "The Seasick Giraffe" a travel, safari and clothing specialty store. John's love for California grew and, in 1987, he opened a second store in San Diego with his then-wife Cora Erskine. In 2002, John returned to Sterling, Ill., to care for his mother Faith Brandau. In 2006, John and wife, Jackie Brandau, moved to Ten Mile, after falling in love with the people, rivers and beautiful location. Although he planned on retiring, John's love for boating and entertaining merged as he enjoyed the opportunity to work at real estate with Coldwell Banker, Jim Henry and Associates in Kingston, selling homes on the Tennessee River. John will forever be remembered for his love of boating and being on the water; his daughters and grandchildren; his sense of humor and fun in all he did; and, the ability to spread to joy to those he touched. John was a member of Luminary United Methodist Church, where he served and sang in the choir. Survivors include two daughters, Shelley Ballmann (Gary) of Nashotah, Wis., and Krista Burns (Jack) of Palos Verdes, Calif.; six grandchildren, Austen, Carsen and Kylie Ballmann and Jack, Morgan and Delaney Burns; and his brother, Douglas Brandau of Sterling, Ill. He was preceded in death by both of his parents, Shad and Faith Brandau. A memorial service was at 4 p.m. Tuesday Oct. 11, at Luminary United Methodist Church in Ten Mile.
