Joanne Janina Burik August 1st, 1940 – October 13th, 2016 On October 13th, 2016, long time San Francisco resident Joanne Burik died peacefully in her home with her children and family by her side. She was 76 years old. The second of five children, Joanne was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1962 from Loyola University, worked at San Francisco General Hospital for 21 years, and was dedicated to a lifelong career of nursing and public health. Joanne married the late Dr. Nicholas Burik in 1967, and they quickly made San Francisco their home. During their 36 year marriage, they raised three children, Anthony, Nicole and Gabrielle. A devout Catholic, Joanne was a parishioner of St. Brendan's Church for over 40 years. Joanne loved to travel and spent the past fifteen years cruising the world many times over. Joanne was an intelligent woman, completed the New York Times crossword puzzle daily and valued independence, faith and family. Joanne was predeceased by her husband Dr. Nicholas Burik, parents John and Jean Cwikla, brother John Cwikla and sister Barbara Herbinson. She is survived by her three children, brother Jim Cwikla and sister Judy Anderson. She leaves behind a loving family and many friends. She will be deeply missed. The family thanks St. Brendan's Church and Hospice by the Bay for their kindness and compassion. Funeral services were held on October 15th at St. Brendan's Church. Joanne will be interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in their All Saints Mausoleum alongside her devoted husband. Donations can be made to Project Access Northern California.
