JoAnn Lillian Montoya Whitaker
Whitaker, JoAnn Lillian Montoya JoAnn Whitaker 83, of Cypress, California, passed away on April 7, 2017 after an extended period of renal failure. JoAnn was born March 25, 1934 to Joseph and Sally Montoya and was the older of two children. She and her brother were raised in San Pedro, where she shared many memories of her happy childhood growing up in a loving and extended family. She was Miss San Pedro Harbor and was part of the Rose Court in 1952. She married Lou Whitaker in 1955. They relocated to Orange County, California in 1961 and settled permanently in Cypress, California in 1967, where she remained for the rest of her life. JoAnn graduated from Long Beach State University and began teaching in 1966. JoAnn was a prolific teacher of students, young and old, and just recently retired at the age of 82. JoAnn touched many students and remained friends with most until she passed, she was most proud of her 50 year teaching career. JoAnn made travel a priority and saw as much of the world as she could, from Egypt to Australia and everywhere in between. She made a point to take her granddaughters on special vacations in order to share her love of travel and open the doors of the world to her family. JoAnn is survived by her brother, Roger Montoya of Garden Grove, California and her three children, Paulette Barlow (Michael) of Rancho Cucamonga, CA, Steven Whitaker (Aimee) of Fountain Valley, CA and Michael Whitaker of Huntington Beach, CA; along with her 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; many cousins, nieces, nephews; and a core group of friends that she maintained through-out her adult life, who all loved her dearly. Services will be held at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach, Thursday, April 20, 2017 with the viewing at 10:30AM and a mass and reception to follow, beginning at 1PM.
