Joan G. Sullivan AGE: 91 • formerly of Newark Joan G. Sullivan, 91, of Salisbury and formerly of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 with her family by her side. Joan Rosemary Godfrey was born April 13, 1925 to Thomas Patrick Godfrey and Josephine Connors Godfrey of Swanpscott, MA. Joan graduated from Salem Teacher's College in 1947 and began her teaching career at Hanover High School in Hanover, NH. It was here that she met the love of her life, Nestor James Sullivan and they married in 1950. Following her husband to Delaware, she continued her career and was hired as the first full time teacher at the newly merged schools of Goldey and Beacom Colleges. Joan retired from Goldey Beacom in 1981. Joan and Jim raised their family in Newark, DE. Three children were blessed to have Joan as their mother. Family always came first. Whether it was being a Girl Scout leader, Homeroom Mother, or carpooling to swim meets, Joan was always there. She loved the outdoors and sports and passed that love onto her children with trips and vacations hiking, skiing, sailing and golfing. Joan's green thumb won her many ribbons for her prize irises in Delaware Flower Shows. Joan is survived by her three children: Debbie Smith and husband, Ben of Bivalve, MD, Nestor James Sullivan, Jr. of Lewes, DE and Patricia J. Krauss of Providence, RI; grandchildren: Daniel Sullivan of Quantico, MD, Kelly Krauss of Medford, MA, CR Krauss and wife Katherine of Nanticoke, MD, Meghan Leof and husband Rick of Forestdale, MA, Katie Krauss of Salisbury, MD, Jenna Barker and husband Steve of Long Island City, NY and Tara Krauss of Medford, MA; four great-grandchildren: William, Henry, Avery and Nolan; sister, Patricia Hill of Marblehead, MA; brother, Ed Godfrey of Wolfeboro, NH and several nieces and nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Nestor James Sullivan after 58 years of marriage. Joan will be laid to rest in a private ceremony with her late husband at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Coastal Hospice in Salisbury, MD or to Easters Seals of Georgetown, DE.
