BYRNE, Joan Grafton Born March 9th, 1932 in Mattoon, Illinois, to Ora and Marion Grafton, the 6th of 7 children. Both parents, two brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. Two sisters survive - Greta Grafton of Mattoon, Il., and Yvonne Boyer of Chugiak, Al. She was married to John Byrne in October, 1950 and divorced in 1972. She had five children, all of whom survive. Julie Diane Byrne, of Colorado Springs, CO, Jay Randolph, of Kaufman, Tx., Janna Kiowski of Wimberly, Tx, John Andrew, of Seagoville, Tx., and Jennifer Creacy of Garland, Tx. She was blessed with 12 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren. While living in Joliet, IL, she worked with the YMCA, taking teenagers on canoe trips through the Canadian Boundary Waters. After moving to Dallas, she continued the trips with students from St. Marks School, teaching them survival skills such as cooking meals over the campfire. She worked at St Mark's from '69-'71. She worked with the Girl Scouts, serving as leader, assistant leader, and assistant Day Camp Director. A member of the First Christian Church (now United Disciples Christian Church) since 1963, she was active in the bazaar, the Friendship Class, the Bible School, and was always a willing volunteer. She worked at SMU for 23 years in the Office of Development, retired 1994, becoming active in the Staff Retirees Association. Her greatest joy was watching her grandchildren in their school activities - sports, drama, music, cheerleading, anything they were active in. She loved to sew and quilt and garden.
