Jerald DuWayne (JD) Thone, age 80, died Sunday October 16, 2016 at Essentia Health in Fargo, surrounded by family.
Jerry was born October 11, 1936 in Fargo, ND to Oscar and Felicia Thone. He grew up in Forman, ND and graduated from Forman High School in 1954. Jerry excelled in high school sports, especially in basketball and baseball. At the age of 17, he was appointed to West Point by Senator Milton Young. Jerry decided he didn't want to pursue a career as an officer and then enlisted in the Army. Upon leaving the military in 1957, he started his career as a heavy equipment operator.
Jerry was united in marriage to Dianne Nelson on October 5, 1963. They started their family in Forman, where he worked at Sargent County Bank. In 1965, Jerry returned to his true calling of construction work. His family traveled with him as he worked on many of the bridges and highways of North and South Dakota. After many years of traveling, Jerry decided to stay closer to home and began selling real estate. The couple then settled in Horace, ND with their three children in 1970, where he resided until his death. He, once again, returned to construction until retirement in 2009.
Jerry was a lifetime member of the Horace Volunteer Fire Department. He served on Horace Park Board for many years and was a member of Horace Lutheran Church. Jerry was an avid reader, especially history and theology. In his younger years he enjoyed golfing, bowling, pool league, fishing and hunting. Jerry was an excellent dancer. His kids loved to watch their parents glide across the floor at every social event. He took great pride in all his grandchildren and enjoyed supporting them at all their events. Jerry was known for his many jokes and the tall tales he told. There was also never a trivia game he could not win.
Jerry will be dearly missed by his entire family. Surviving are his wife of 53 years: Dianne; a son: Jay (Kristie) Thone of Horace, ND; two daughters: Jayne Mapes of Fargo and Jana (Barry) Bowers of Detroit Lakes, MN; seven grandchildren: Jerrica Thone, Cole, Karson, and Drew Mapes, and Morgan, Parker, and Grace Bowers; seven nieces and nephews, which he enjoyed as much as his own grandchildren.
