Barlow, Jeffrey G. 74 Aug. 31, 1942 Oct. 12, 2016 Jeffrey G. Barlow, Ph.D died peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016, at home. Born Aug. 31, 1942 in Benton, IL, to parents Colleen (Garrigus) and Lewis Barlow. He graduated from Benton High School, went to Southern Illinois University, University of Pittsburgh, and received his PhD from University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Barlow taught Asian History in Oregon at institutions of higher learning; University of Oregon, Lewis & Clark College, and retired as Professor Emeritus from Pacific University. He was a co-founding member of the Northwest China Council and editor of the Journal of the Association for History and Computing. A lifelong friend of China, he was active in the U.S. China Peoples' Friendship Association before normalization of U.S.-China relations in 1978. From 1979 to 2010 he led academic, business, student and tourist groups to China and Vietnam. In the 1990's he worked for normalization of U.S. relations with Vietnam. Dr. Barlow was well published in his fields and has several books to his name. He was a Fulbright student and a Fulbright Scholar. Jeffrey is survived by his wife of 41 years, Christine; son, Lewis; former spouse, Janelle; stepson, Bret; daughter, Clare; brother, Charles; and his doodle Dharmo. Dr. Barlow rode in several Cycle Oregons, STPs, and studied martial arts under Al Dacascos. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church. Memorial services will be held 11:00 am Oct. 21, 2016 at the Yamhill United Methodist Church, 195 S. Laurel Street. A reception follows at his favorite local restaurant Zippy's Pizza, 180 S. Maple St. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to: Northwest China Council, Willamette Valley Hospice, Lewis & Clark College Overseas Studies, or the Pacific University History Department, in care of Macy & Son Funeral Directors.
