JEAN BROOKSHIRE POWELL Jean Brookshire Powell passed away February 8, 2017 in Altavita Village, formerly known as Air Force Village West, Riverside, CA, at 96. She was the loving wife for 72 years to Harvey "Bill" Powell, LtCol USAF Ret. She is survived by her son Nicholas Powell & wife Barbara, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, as well as a sister- in-law and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grand- nephews. She was born Jean Ellen Brookshire to Wayne and Ruth Brookshire on December 4, 1920, in the same house her father had been born, in Downey, California in 1893. She was proud to proclaim herself a 4th generation Californian dating back to her great grandfather's (James Brookshire's) arrival in the mid-1800s. Jean met Bill Powell in Excelsior High School, Norwalk, fell in love, and was married on April 6, 1941. As a B-17 pilot in World War II, Bill flew 31 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. During Bill's Air Force career and later, they lived in England, Japan, the Philippines (twice), and Germany. They traveled extensively over a 60 year span, visiting almost 100 counties, reveling in the histories, diverse cultures, foods and wines. Her favorite adventures were riding camels in Petra, cruising among glaciers in Alaska, and being on safari in Kenya. Jean completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of the Philippines and her Masters of Science in Education at the University of Southern California. Jean culminated her career as the Director of Adult Education in the Moreno Valley School District. Jean was a gracious hostess who enjoyed preparing world-class dishes from over 50 countries, after graduating from the renown Cordon Bleu School of Cooking in Paris. She also devoted much energy to gardening, quilting, reading and writing. Jean will be buried with Bill in Riverside National Cemetery. There will be a memorial in her honor at the Altavita Village at noon on Feb 18. We will miss her smile, enthusiasm, and humor greatly.
