Ret. Col. Jay Don Gensler passed away due to unexpected complications from lung cancer on January 13, 2017 at 8pm in Columbia, MD. He was 79 years old. He is survived by his wife Ivonna Gensler, son Donald Gensler, and granddaughter Katharina Gensler. Jay Don Gensler was born and grew up in Monahans, TX. He continued to travel back to West Texas for many years later with his son, fixing up the family home, hunting for arrow heads, and walking for long days through the sand dunes. He graduated from the University of Texas, majoring in Chemical Engineering and from the University of California Berkeley with a Masters in Environmental Engineering. He spent 24 years in the US Army. During that time he met his wife Ivonna B. Baumann. In 1972 they had their son, Donald. While stationed in Landstuhl, Germany, Jay Don and his son hunted for mushrooms in the German forests, often with his son on his shoulders pointing out the "Pfefferling" mushrooms. After his retirement from the Army, Jay Don began volunteering with his son's ice hockey clubs and spent 14 years as Commissioner for the Maryland Scholastic Hockey League, helping to build the organization from the fledgling early years to the current league with 70 youth teams throughout the Baltimore Washington area. He is dearly missed by his family, friends, and those who knew him. Jay Don Gensler's funeral will be at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery on Friday February 17th at 1130am. He will be buried with full military honors.
