Janine Giles Kowak, 75, passed away peacefully at her home in Atlanta, Ga., Saturday, July 30, 2016, after a long struggle with cancer. Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late Esther (Casey) of Ashley and Douglas Giles. Janine attended GAR High School and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Oglethorpe University, a Master of Science degree in counseling from Georgia State University and her Ph.D. in psychology and counseling from the University of Sarasota. Janine began her career as a fashion illustrator for the Boston Store (now Boscov's). More recently, worked at the Georgia Power Co. in Atlanta, Ga., as a psychologist. Janine enjoyed traveling with her husband, Stephen, and her family. She loved art, music, reading and writing poetry. She will always be remembered for her kindness and her gentleness to others throughout her life. She is survived by her husband, Stephen, having celebrated 45 years of marriage; and by her son, Robert Kyle and his wife, Marci, Clearwater, Fla. She is also survived by her sister, Charlene Aben, and nephew, Jonah Aben, Swoyersville; and many cousins both locally and out of state. A Mass in her memory will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in St. Patrick's Church, Parrish Street, Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. James E. McGahagan officiating. Friends are invited to celebrate Janine's life with her family from 9:30 a.m. until the Mass. Donations in her memory may be sent to Southern Grace Hospice, 384 Racetrack Road, McDonough, GA 30253.
