Janice I. Girton
Janice I. Girton, age 84, of Sturgis, passed away Wednesday evening, Jan. 11, 2017, at Thurston Woods Village in Sturgis. She was born June 19, 1932, in Sturgis, a daughter of the late Clement and Frances (Hibbard) Bothamley. Janice was a lifelong Sturgis resident. On Oct. 16, 1954, she married David Lee Girton. Janice attended Hibbard Country School from the first through eighth grades and was a graduate and salutatorian of Sturgis High School with the class of 1950. She continued her education at Michigan State University, where in 1954 she earned her bachelor's degree with majors in speech and English and a minor in political science, secondary education. In the 1960s, she received a master's degree in education from Western Michigan University. In 1954, she began her teaching career at White Pigeon Public Schools, where she taught at the junior high and high school until 1957. In 1964, she accepted a position with Sturgis Public Schools, where she taught in the middle school until her retirement in 1994. Janice was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sturgis, Michigan Farm Bureau Action Group, past member of Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and United Methodist Women and different groups over the years. She enjoyed gardening, reading and writing and family activities. Janice had hobbies and involvements, but what she truly cherished was spending time with her grandsons. She is survived by her loving and dedicated husband of 62 years, David L. Girton; a son, David M. (Ronna M.) Girton of Sturgis; a daughter, Lynelle (Gregory A.) Thrasher of Sturgis; three grandsons, Derek A. (Lauren) Girton, Gregory P. Thrasher and Seth D. Thrasher; three step-grandchildren, Joshua G. Poorman, Samantha M. Poorman and Jacob G. Poorman; two sisters, Alice Happel of Burr Oak and Carol (Bruce) Gaumnitz of Clear Lake, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2-5 p.m. Sunday at the Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis. Funeral services celebrating the life of Janice I. Girton will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Pastor Barry Edds will officiate. A graveside committal will follow the service at White Pigeon Township Cemetery.
