SUTTON – Jan Ellen Ferland passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at home peacefully in Sutton, at the age of 71. She was born on May 21, 1945, in Patuxent River, Md., daughter of Barbara (Jerome) and Frank Christofferson. Jan graduated from Horton Watkins Ladue High School in St. Louis, and attended Loretto Heights College in Colorado Springs, Plymouth State University in New Hampshire, and Colorado State University in Colorado, majoring in education. During the Vietnam War she joined the Red Cross and was responsible for the Red Cross chapter at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, and later, Lubbock (now Reese) Air Force Base in Lubbock, Texas, where she met and married her husband, Denis P. Ferland, in September 1969. They were married for 41 years before his death in 2011. She continued her work for the Red Cross as a case worker for Services to the Armed Forces helping connect service members with their families and resources in emergencies. In addition, she volunteered with the Red Cross Disaster Action Team providing disaster relief. She provided Red Cross assistance at ground zero following the attacks of 9/11. Jan also loved photography and documenting the lives of her loved ones. She was deeply spiritual but did not subscribe to any denomination. She was known as "Saint Jan" by her brothers and sisters. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, and brother, Scott. She is survived by her two sisters, Carrie Handy and Kit Lammert; and her brothers, Clyde, Frank, Carl and Jim Christofferson. She will be deeply missed by her beloved friends and family including sons, Denis M. Ferland of New London, James D. Ferland of Chicago, Christoffer G. Ferland of Fishers, Ind. and Gabriel J. Ferland of Fishers, Ind.; and daughter, Jan S. Dyment of Sutton; grandchildren Tai, Mia, Amanda, Kaleb, Doug, Allison, Abrahm, Isaac, Gretchen, Bridget, Jason, Kayana and Jayna; great-grandchildren, McKinsey, Brayden and Ashley. The family extends deep gratitude to the Concord Visiting Nurse Association hospice program and the Cremation Society of New Hampshire for their genuine care and concern in her final days. A memorial celebration of life will be held at the home of her son for close friends and family.
