Van Doren Jr, James "Jim" Dorrington April 22, 1951 - January 2, 2017 James "Jim" Dorrington Van Doren, Jr. LMSW, age 65, died on Monday, January 2, 2017 at Tampa General Hospital from complications following open heart surgery. He was born on April 22, 1951 in Oak Park, IL to parents James D. and Margaret (Peterson) Van Doren. He is survived by his wife Georjean (GiGi) Polich Van Doren; children: Jeremy James, Kathryn "Kate" Ruth, and Peter Michael; former wife Linda Huff Van Doren; stepchildren: Karl Nousiainen, Melissa Nousiainen Haggerty (Glenn), and foster son Curtis Young. He is also survived by his sister Margaret "Peg" Saltz (Art) and her two sons Hal and John (Melissa) Stinespring; grandchildren: Maximus James, and Sylas Franklin and thirteen other nephews and nieces. Jim was a mental health and addictions counselor whose advocacy for children and families spanned over forty years. While his purpose in life was to help others, his enduring passion was his family and having adventures in a life filled with kindness, love, and joy. A Memorial Service will be held at The Unitarian Universal Church of Tampa, Florida on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with fellowship and refreshments following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to local homeless charities or Public Radio or Television.
