TURNER, James James H. Turner, Jr., 87, died Monday, February 13, 2017 at his home in Cumming, GA. James was born January 14, 1930 to James and Kathleen Turner in Gadsden, Alabama, the oldest of four children. James met the love of his life, Martha, and they were married in Gadsden, Alabama in 1950. He graduated with Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Alabama where he also played in the Million Dollar Band. He later attended Harvard University for a four month Executive Management program. James served in the U.S. Army where he was a 1st Lt. from 1952-1954 and later a Captain in the Army Reserves. James worked as a CPA in the insurance industry for many years before moving with Martha and their four young children to Sandy Springs, Georgia in 1964. He became the Executive Vice President of Kennesaw Life Insurance Co. until 1980, when he left to do what he had always wanted to do: become a stockbroker and financial planner. James so loved the business that he did not retire from UBS Financial Services until the age of 70. James and Martha were both very active at Sandy Springs United Methodist Church for over five decades. They loved traveling, hiking, trivial pursuit, square dancing, spending time with friends, and any and all excuses to get together with their children and grandchildren. James is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Martha (Hall) Turner; his children, Cathy (Mike) Herb, Leland Turner, Carol (Gary) Vey, and Lisa (John) Lassig; his nine grandchildren, Sarah (Jeremy) Farley, Nicholas Winzurk, Amanda (Bryan) Cunningham, Amelia (Robert) Ward, Molly (Nic) Cannington, Melissa (Sam) Bailey, David Turner, Kellie Lassig, and Sam Turner; his two great-grandchildren, Nolan and Turner Cannington; his brother Jerry Turner and his sister Sandra Fee. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his brother, Bobby Turner. A memorial service will be held on February 18, 2017 at Sandy Springs Chapel at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sandy Springs United Methodist Church or any charity of choice.
