JAMES "JIM" SMITH TANEYTOWN, MD James "Jim" Smith, 89, of Taneytown, MD, formerly of Indiana, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday February 8, 2017 surrounded by family. Born April 2, 1927 in Waukegan, IL to Jewel (Orbank) and Stanley Alfred Smith. He was a communicant of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where he could always be counted on to bake a cake for any and all bake sales. In 1943, Jim began his career with Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway as a Fireman while still in high school. During WWII Jim joined the Maritime Service, and after the war Jim returned to his position on the railway working his way up to Engineer. He was an avid huntsman, ball room dancer, golfer, cross-word- puzzle extraordinaire, and a lover of all things sweet. There was not a book that you could find, that Jim probably hadn't read. With his beloved wife and partner-in-crime Ree, he would constantly travel, going to casinos, cruises, road trips, and to visit family as often as they possibly could, always looking for the next big adventure. Jim is survived by his brother Stanley and wife Patricia Smith of Antioch, Illinois. His children Rosemarie "Doodie" O'Connell of Taneytown, Nancy and husband Dr. Bruce Becker of Valparaiso, In, Jacquee and husband John Gordon of Valparaiso, IN, and Timothy O'Connell of Marion, IN; grandchildren, Nicholas Ritchie, Alexis Lajcin, David and Jessica Gordon; great- grandson, Cameron Lajcin. He was predeceased by his sister Corrine Rose and beloved wife Rosemarie "Ree" (O'Connell) Smith. A memorial mass will be held at a later date at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Taneytown, MD. In lieu of Flowers, Donations can be made in Jim's memory to Carroll Hospice of Maryland.
