James M. Smith December 22, 2016 James M. Smith, 80, of Ft. Myers, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 22, 2016. He had been a resident of Ft. Myers since he was a young boy. He was born March 4, 1936 in Sanford, NC, the son of James and Beatrice (née Thomas). God always came first in his life. He cherished and worshiped his wife Dot for over fifty years. He was also a proud and loving father of his son Jeff. In business he was fortunate to have been successful in several different endeavors that he pursued. Jim was a special man who always gave of himself. He never met a stranger and would always help anyone in need. He is long remembered for helping the youth of Fort Myers. In 1967 he started a youth football team "The Fort Myers Rebels". He, along with many dedicated people, built one of the most successful organizations ever. Jim often reminisced about all the great kids and special families associated with the Rebels. He always felt this was his greatest accomplishment. To the end of his life he was still known to many as "Coach". Mr. Smith is survived by his loving son, Jeffery R. Smith of Estero; his brothers and sister, Nick (Nancy) Smith of Labelle, FL, Jane (James) Rider of Clewiston, FL and Gary (Cathy) Smith of Ft.
