COLUMBUS — James Dennis Riggs, 90, of Delaware, Ohio, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2017 at Willow Brook Christian Communities in Delaware, Ohio following an extended illness. On Nov. 15, 1926, he was born in Delaware, Ohio the son of the late Hart C. Riggs and Lulu (Kent) Riggs. On April 19, 1974, he married Carolyn Hudson. Survivors include Dan Riggs (wife Karen) of Tucson, Ariz., Teri Riggs (wife Jodi) of Stoughton, Mass.; and stepchildren, Keith "Butch" Hudson (wife Susan) of Delaware, Ohio, Peggy Woods (husband Brad) of Delaware, Ohio, Patsy Wells (husband David) of Ashley, Ohio and the late Craig Hudson (wife Tina) Halletsville, Texas. He was preceded in death by wife, Carolyn Riggs of 32 years; and his 5 older sisters, Lucille (Thomas/Nash), Francis (Wollum), Marjorie (Burns), Mary (Crumb/Schulman), and Catherine "Teeny" (Wheeler). He is also survived by many children and great-grandchildren. After his World War II Naval service aboard the USS Rudyard Bay from 1944-46 in the Marshall Islands, he returned to Delaware and was employed as a welder at Hughes-Keenan and married Eileen (Welch). He was then hired on to the Delaware Police Department as a beat cop retiring as a Senior Captain over the uniformed officers in 1978. He married the love of his life Carolyn on April 19, 1974, and eventually they relocated to the Cape Coral area of Florida's west coast where he continued to work as an independent contractor for Elbon Industries. He was an avid golfer in his younger life and a life long pursuer of perch and walleye from Lake Erie's Catawba Island area. He was also a ruthless "no mercy" 8-ball and ping pong enthusiast. The Riggs and Hudson families would like to extend the most heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for the tremendous outpouring of kindness and affection for our father. So, to all of the family and friends who have reached out to Dad over these last difficult months we are truly most humble and grateful. May you Rest in Peace, Jim Riggs. A graveside burial service will be at a later date to be determined. The services will be conducted by the Ohio Cremation & Memorial Society and per Jim's request will held on a beautiful day in the Spring at Oak Grove Cemetery, Delaware, Ohio.
