In memory of
James L. Nelson
James L. Nelson Born: February 12, 1936 Died: March 10, 2017 James L. "Jim" Nelson, age 81, of Dubuque, Iowa, and formerly of Downers Grove, Illinois, was called home suddenly at 6:10 a.m., on Friday, March 10, 2017, at home. To honor Jim's life, a Memorial Visitation will be held at Adams-Winterfield & Sullivan Funeral Home, 4343 Main St. (1 blk. So. of Ogden Ave.) Downers Grove, Illinois, from 6:00PM to 9:00PM on Wednesday, March 15. Burial will be in the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL. Jim was born on February 12, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, as the son of Robert and Dorothy (Muehe) Nelson. Jim proudly served his country in the Korean War as a member of the 75th Ranger Regiment's 3rd Battalion, an elite special operations force of the U.S. Army. After completing his military service, he worked in the construction fields and volunteered as a firefighter and EMT with the Lombard, Illinois, Fire Department before joining the U.S. Postal Service. While working as a mail carrier at the Westmont Post Office, Jim met Susan Holland, a mail clerk in the same office. The couple married on May 2, 1987, in Westmont, Illinois. Over the next 29 years, Jim and Susan were inseparable. They never ran out of things to talk about and never ceased to make each other laugh. They took joy in life's simplest moments and truly worked as a team, raising two wonderful daughters and taking on many ambitious home improvement projects. Jim enjoyed ski trips with his wife and friends in Michigan and Colorado, as well as occasional afternoons spent fishing or hunting. His easygoing sense of humor and endless supply of stories endeared him to friends, family and strangers alike, and he could often be found sharing a beer with friends after handball or with fellow veterans at the American Legion. Jim also had a deep appreciation for all kinds of music and was known to listen to his favorite songs at full volume, filling the house with the sounds of Tchaikovsky or Roy Orbison. Sadly, Jim has been called home after putting up a good fight with mounting health issues over the past few years. Thankfully, he leaves us with a wealth of memories and lessons to carry us through until we see him again in his new and perfect Heavenly state. Jim will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him, Those left to cherish Jim's memory include his loving wife, Susan Nelson, Dubuque, Iowa; his daughters, Hillary (Dustin) Baker, Dubuque, Iowa and Kaitlynn Nelson, Dubuque, Iowa; his son, James Nelson, Illinois; his grandson, Quinton Baker, Dubuque, Iowa; and his brother, Robert (Judaline) Nelson, Downers Grove, Illinois. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Bill Nelson. A James L. "Jim" Nelson memorial fund has been established, which will be distributed among his favorite charities.
