James V. Gries September 21, 1934 - January 5, 2017 Stayton - James V. Gries of Stayton passed away January 5, 2017. Jim was born September 21, 1934 to Peter and Nettie (VanHandel) Gries. He grew up in Sublimity with his six siblings: twins Muriel Hafner and Marcella Lulay, Donna Lou Frost, Marjorie Humphreys, his twin Jack Gries, and Gary Gries. He attended St. Boniface schools and was active playing sports. After high school Jim began working at Freres Lumber Company and Building Supply where he remained for 47 years. In 1954 he married his high school sweetheart Marilyn Palmer. They were married for 55 years. Jim leaves behind four children: James (Mary) Gries, Gary (Christine) Gries, DeAnne Stuckart, Nette (David) Abderhalden; grandchildren Craig (Brooke) Gries, Jaime (David) Shachter, Marcus (Jessica) Gries, Kelsey Abderhalden, Rachel and Kyra Gries, Erica and Branden Stuckart; and great-grandchildren, Emmy and Elin Gries, Sara and Abigail Shachter; and sister-in-law DeAnne Sumpter. Jim enjoyed outdoor activities, watching sports, and spending time with his family. He also volunteered his time to the Boy Scouts of America and the Immaculate Conception Parish. Jim was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn Gries, sisters Muriel Hafner, Marcella Lulay, Marjorie Humphreys, brother Jack Gries, son-in-law Randy Stuckart, and grandson Jeremy Gries. Services will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Stayton, Rosary Vigil: Sunday January 15, 2017, 6:30PM. Funeral Mass: Monday, January 16, 2017, 10:30 AM.
