James Edward Chapman, 92, born September 7, 1920, and departed this life May 9, 2013, at his home in Pembroke. Deacon Chapman was a longstanding, faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Pembroke, serving as Deacon for many years. He worked faithfully in his church, doing whatever needed to be done, always with a servant spirit. He was retired from the Celanese Plant at Narrows with many years service, was a member of Pembroke Ruritan Club, and American Legion Post No. 311 in Pembroke. He was a veteran of the United States Army in World War II. Deacon Chapman will be sorely missed in the community. He was a sweet, kind and humble man who had a great love for God. He was one who was sincere and genuine in his expressions of love to everyone. He would often say "I love everybody", and we know he spoke the truth. Deacon Chapman was preceded in death by his parents, Kempet and Maude Elizabeth Slash Chapman; his beloved wife, Mary Frances Casey Chapman; two brothers and five sisters, John and Lawrence Chapman, Mable Wilson, Lillian and Elizabeth Chapman, Rosie King, and Glenna Dickerson. He leaves to cherish his memory his two daughters, Mary Murray, of Pembroke, who cared for him during his entire illness, and Regina Patterson, of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; his eight grandchildren Mark Chapman, Mason and Marvin Murray, whom he looked on as his sons, Pam, Carl, Brian, Lisa, and Renita; his 18 great-grandchildren; his three great-great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Oretha Anderson; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church, Chapman Avenue in Pembroke with Pastor James Cooper officiating.
