In memory of
James L. Carpenter
James L. Carpenter, 70, a lifelong resident of Scranton, died Thursday evening at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center after an illness. He and his wife, the former Mary Lewis, would have celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary in May. Jim was the son of the late Peter and Elsie Webb Carpenter. Following high school, he enlisted in the Navy and served four years and had two tours in the Vietnam War aboard the USS Saint Paul CA-73. He was employed by several maintenance companies before opening Carpenter's Cleaning Service, where he worked alongside his wife for many years. He was a member of St. Ann's Basilica. As a proud veteran, he became a life member of the Veterans of Vietnam War Inc. and the Veterans Coalition. He was also a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed spending time listening to his shortwave radio and loved being in the company of his family. He was always proud of his children and grandchildren, and loved bragging about their accomplishments. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed. Also surviving are a son, James Carpenter Jr. and his wife, Brenda, Scranton; a daughter, Krysta Pero and her husband, Tony, Swoyersville; two grandchildren, James David and Jessica Lee Carpenter; and furbaby, Blossom. The family would like to extend its appreciation to the staff and caregivers at Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, Plains Twp. VA Medical Center and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the care Jim received during his final months. The funeral will be Tuesday from the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Basilica, 1250 St. Ann's St., Scranton.
