In memory of
Dr J. F. Nieto
J.F. Nieto, M.D. 1943-2016 Dr. J. Felipe Nieto, age 73 (Sept. 11, 1943 – Sept. 30, 2016) passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family and friends in Montgomery, Texas. Felipe was born in a rural community in Mexico, the fourth of twelve children born to Alejandrina (Puentes) Nieto & Lucio Nieto. Early in life, his town's inadequate healthcare sparked Felipe's desire to become a physician. Although he began school at nine, Felipe became the first in his family to attend college. He received his Medical Degree in 1972 from The University of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. Felipe came to the United States for a residency in surgery. Although he enjoyed surgery, Felipe soon realized he had a different calling. His caring and compassionate personality led him to Psychiatry, graduating from Baylor College of Medicine in 1980. Felipe spent the following year at Baylor completing a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Community Psychiatry. In addition, he was a Clinical Assistant Professor at Baylor for the next seven years. Felipe opened a private practice in 1981 and served as Medical Director at several hospitals. In 1990, Felipe entered The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston to pursue a Fellowship in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. After graduating in 1992, Felipe returned to private practice. His concern for the overall health of his patients motivated him to practice primary care, in addition to psychiatry. Felipe's goal was to create a difference in Houston's neglected Mexican American community as well as to improve the mental health of youth and adults in Texas. He felt privileged and honored to provide individualized care to every patient. Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March of 2011, Felipe continued to practice through his surgeries and chemotherapy. He was grateful for each day he could intervene and enhance the lives of his patients. As Felipe's body became too weak for him to continue working, his mind and spirit remained inspirationally strong. Felipe retired as Medical Director of Broadway Medical Clinic, P.A. in August of 2016. Besides being devoted to his profession, Felipe loved his family, cooking, gardening, cars and had recently developed an interest in astrology. Felipe was respected and loved as a husband, father, brother, grandfather, friend, and doctor. Felipe is survived by his loving wife Julie (McParlane) Nieto, daughters Giovanna Nieto, Lucia Nieto and son Andre Nieto; sons Luis (Melea) Nieto, Robert (Jeanne) Nieto and daughter Christy (Eli Chase) Nieto and their mother Josefina Escalante Nieto; grandchildren Erin Nieto, Jack Nieto, Josie Nieto, Lauren Nieto, Sophia Nieto, Benjamin Felipe Chase; Sisters Demetria (Erasmo) Galvan, Tita (Jose Adolfo) Mata, Kuky Nieto, brothers Jose (Erika) Nieto, Amado (Esperanza) Nieto; brothers-in-law, Keith (Sounida) McParlane, Kevin McParlane; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Felipe was preceded in death by his mother, Alejandrina (Puentes) Nieto; father, Lucio Nieto, sisters, Teodora (Alberto) Marin, Mary Nieto, Irma (Frank) Chin, Lulu Nieto; and brothers, Eleuterio (Anita) Nieto, Felipe Nieto; and nieces Socorro Marin, Patty Galvan, and nephew Pepe Marin. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 29, 2016 at 11:00 am at The Church of St John, 2615 St. Beulah Chapel Road, Montgomery, TX 77316. A reception will be held following the service to celebrate Felipe's life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you perform a random act of kindness or plant a favorite tree.
