Colonel J. GODFREY CROWE US Army (Ret.)
CROWE J. GODFREY CROWE Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.) Beloved husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather, passed away suddenly on October 8, 2016. Godfrey was born into a Navy family on January 6, 1930, in Long Beach, CA. He was residing in Pearl Harbor when it was bombed on December, 7, 1941 and was evacuated with his mother to California while his father remained on duty in Hawaii. After numerous assignments, the family settled in Washington, DC. Godfrey graduated from the Landon School and received an appointment to the United States Military Academy. He graduated in 1951 and entered the Armor branch of the U.S. Army. He married Patricia Bell Barr on November 5, 1954 and she accompanied him on his assignments both in this country and abroad. Godfrey served in Korea and Vietnam. While in Vietnam from 1968-1969, Godfrey earned a Silver Star, 3 Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Air Medal and the Soldier's Medal. He remained ever-loyal to West Point and his life exemplified its values of duty, honor, country. Godfrey was a selfless, loving and humble man whose simplicity belied a strong, determined character. His kindness, sincerity and easygoing nature endeared him to others and he took more joy in their successes than in his own. With a patient, trusting attitude and a good sense of humor, Godfrey approached life fearlessly and he imparted a sense of security to those around him. Married for almost 62 years when Pat died in May, 2016, his close family was Godfrey's primary source of happiness and his greatest legacy. He was adored by his 11 grandchildren as well as by many of their friends, all who fondly called him "Pop". Godfrey loved spending time with his family and friends at his home in Maine and there he passed on his lifelong love of sailing to his children and grandchildren. Godfrey is survived by his children, David Crowe, Susan Mumford, Trish Reifenberger, Karen Brandecker and Finnie Caldwell, and by his grandchildren, Cara, Joey, Kevin, Jeff, Tommy, Kristen, Mark, Grettie, Hayley, Nicole and Matthew, and by his faithful dog, Belle.
