In memory of
Irmgard Preu
Preu, Irmgard Irmgard Roessel Preu passed away at 7:03 p.m. on Friday evening, October 14, 2016 at the age of 94 in Galena, Illinois at the Galena-Stauss Nursing home hospice care unit, surrounded by her family. Irmgard was born in Schneeberg, eastern Germany in 1922, the daughter of Alfred and Helene Roessel. She had one brother, Rudolf Roessel, who was killed in WWII at the Russian front. Irmgard joined the Arbeits Dienst, a German work service corps for women, in 1937, at the age of 15 and worked for a pharmacist in Prague, Czechoslovakia until just before the end of WWII. While in Czechoslovakia she met her husband, Willi Preu, who worked for a German aircraft company. She and Willi were married in February, 1945 in Schneeberg during an allied bombing attack. Irmgard and her husband moved to Kirchheim-Teck in southwestern Germany, where their first child, Monika was born in 1946. She helped her husband in his woodworking shop part-time. Later the family moved to Goeppingen/Bartenbach, where she worked out of her home, making products for a toy company. In 1957 Irmgard and Willi welcomed a son, Peter. In 1958 the family immigrated to the United States and settled in Dubuque, Iowa, the town to which Willi's sister and parents had immigrated earlier. Willi worked for CARADCO Windows & Doors and Irmgard worked part-time for a snack shop at the University of Dubuque, and later in the Dubuque Senior High School cafeteria. In 1964 Irmgard and Willi had a third child, Christine, with whom she spent the last four and a half years of her life. In 1976 there was another move for the family to Wausau, Wisconsin where Willi was employed by Crestline Windows & Doors until he retired in 1984. Irmgard and her family enjoyed traveling and nature hiking, and Irmgard enjoyed "Coffee-klatsch" with her German friends. Her husband died in 2010 after 65 years of marriage. Irmgard lived alone for a year, then moved in with her younger daughter Christine and her husband Gregg Loring. In 2013 the three of them moved to rural Galena, Illinois, which allowed Irmgard to see more of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in Iowa and Illinois. Her health declined, and she spent the last ten months of her life at the Galena-Stauss Nursing Home in Galena, Illinois. Irmgard is survived by her daughter Monika (Jim) Breed, her son Peter (Gayle) Preu and her daughter Christine (Gregg) Loring. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Tom Breed, Nathan (Heather) Breed, Katrina (David) Wager, Jeremy (Becca) Preu and Jason Preu, twelve great grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren, as well as a nephew, Klaus Roessel, in Germany. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at the Brainard Funeral Home, Everest Chapel,5712 Memorial Court, Weston. The service will be conducted by her son-in-law, the Rev. Dr. James L. Breed. Visitation will take place from 12:00 pm until the time of services at the funeral home.
