Burns, Irma 12/8/1922 - 9/26/2016 Chelsea, MI Irma Burns ("Irma Dee") died September 26, 2016. She was born December 8, 1922 in Scottsville, Kentucky to a family of farmers, carpenters, preachers, and missionaries. She was a peaceful and loving person who made friends easily and could redirect a negative thought with a word and a smile. She grew up living in several different states, but Scottsville, Kentucky remained close to her heart. After graduating from high school, she moved to the Detroit area, first working at Cunninghams, where she met her future husband Gerald Burns, and then in the Cadillac Assembly plant as part of the World War II effort. Irma and Gerald were married June 29, 1946 following the end of the war and set up residence in River Rouge, where they raised five children. She was preceded in death by her parents, her six siblings and her husband Gerald ("Jerry"). She is survived by David, Candice (Brian Maiville), Robert (MaryKay), Larry (Lotta) and Barton (Lori) and grandchildren, Burns Turner, Marguerite Maiville, Joseph Maiville, Jon Burns, Lauren Burns, Sessie Burns, Rudi Burns, Alison Burns and Zak Burns. She also lovingly considered Ami Agnetti, Pari Hollenback, and Wilder Turner her grandchildren. Her long time friend, Dorothy Rasmussen also survives her. She volunteered at St. Hilda's Church, River Rouge Schools, the Detroit Institute of Arts and many other places. Her house was also a welcoming place where friends and family could find a meal, a smile and a hug. Irma leaves a legacy of love and happiness. She always encouraged her children to smile and be happy and she practiced what she preached. Her positive attitude will be missed by all who knew her. Whenever an obituary stated that a person had "passed away, "Irma would wonder where they had passed to. Obviously, she had a wonderful sense of humor. A celebration of Irma's life will take place at the Dexter United Methodist Church (Dexter, MI) on October 30, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive guests at 12:30. A light luncheon will follow. Donations can be made in her name to Dexter Faith in Action, Silver Maples of Chelsea or Make a Wish Foundation.
