Irene Sammons Abernathy Irene Sammons Abernathy, 87, formerly of 239 Motley Avenue, died Saturday, January 22, 2011, in Chatham Health and Rehabilitation Center, Chatham. She had been a resident of Emeritus of Danville for the past two years. She was born in Danville on June 4, 1923, a daughter of George T. Sammons and Carrie Suit Sammons. Irene was married to Walter E. "Buddy" Abernathy on August 2, 1947, and he preceded her in death on May 29, 1999. She attended Schoolfield High School and was employed with Dan River, Inc. for 44 years until her retirement. She was a member of Third Avenue Christian Church. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Ernest Sammons. Irene is survived by two sons, Tony Abernathy and his wife, Regina, of Graham, N.C., and Reverend David Abernathy and his wife, Liz, of Blairs; a stepdaughter, Carolyn Whitehead, and her husband, Wilbur, of Dillwyn; and seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Highland Burial Park, with the Reverend Freddie Vicks officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of David and Liz Abernathy, 1204 Snakepath Road, Blairs. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Good News Jail and Prison Ministry, P.O.
