Hilliard James Arrowood Raleigh - Hilliard James Arrowood, 98, of Raleigh, NC died Tuesday, October 11, 2016. Born August 9, 1918 in Leicester, NC, he was the son of Celia Alexander and James Ellis Arrowood. A most kind and considerate man, he was conscientious and unreservedly dependable. He never disparaged others, always had a smile and was respected and appreciated by all who knew him. Hilliard grew up in Candler, NC and attended North Carolina State University. During World War II, he circumnavigated the globe while serving in the Merchant Marine Transport Service which supplied material for the war effort. While stationed in New York City, he met his future wife Sara. Hilliard was an engineering designer and worked for Enka Corporation in Candler, Sperry Rand Corporation in Queens, NY, and Grumman Aerospace Corporation in Bethpage, NY. He was a devoted husband and father and took great pride in his sons and grandchildren. He was active in Boy Scouts, especially while his sons were members. After retirement, he resided in Asheville and later moved to Raleigh. He was a long time volunteer in the Asheville and Raleigh Communities, working with First Night Raleigh, Rex Hospital where he received an award for his valuable contributions, other local hospitals, and the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Raleigh. During his years in Asheville, he loved hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains with Sara while they were members of the Carolina Hiking Club. He was preceded in death by his devoted wife of 65 years, Sara H. Arrowood. Surviving are sons, James A. Arrowood, M.D. (Catherine) of Richmond, VA and Andrew H. Arrowood (Elizabeth) of Raleigh; grandchildren, Kristin M. Arrowood (Heather) of Raleigh and Madison J. Arrowood of Richmond, VA. A service will be held on Saturday, October 15 at 2:30 PM in the Memorial Garden at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7000 Creedmoor Road, Raleigh, NC 27613. Pastor Tim Brown will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hilliard's memory to the Alzheimer's Association or the charity of your choice.
