Hester Lavern Elliott LUBBOCK-Hester Lavern (Jo) Elliott passed away Jan. 2, 2017, in Lubbock, Texas. She was born Jan. 1, 1920, in Merkel, Texas, to John and Hester Hughes. She was one of nine Children who all preceded her in death. After graduation from Texas Tech University in 1941 with a degree in home economics, she moved to Portland, Oregon, where she worked in the ship yards during World War II. While in Portland she met her husband of 62 years, Gilbert Elliott, who preceded her in death in 2006. After moving to Grand Prairie, Texas, with her growing family she continued her education at North Texas University and obtained her Bachelors in Education and a Masters of Education in 1964. She was an educator in the Grand Prairie school district for more than 35 years. Jo and Gill were active members of their church, St Andrews Episcopal Church, where she was a member of the Alter Guild, Daughters of the King, Ladies Axillary, taught Sunday school and served on the St. Andrews School Board. Jo also served as a volunteer for several service organizations. Survivors include her son, Steven Elliott of Dallas, Texas; daughter, Susan McCutchin and her husband, Jim of Lubbock, Texas; granddaughter, Linsey (David) Warshaw of Lubbock; grandson, Zachary McCutchin (Dayna) of Lubbock; and great-grandchildren, Max McCutchin and Maggie Warshaw, both of Lubbock; and several nieces and nephews. A heartfelt thank you goes out to the Sherick home and the Wilshire Place for their compassion and care. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, 2017, at St. Andrews Church in Grand Prairie, Texas. Memorial gifts may be made to St Andrews Church in Grand Prairie and The Sherick Home or the Wilshire Place both in Lubbock.
