Herman Stewart
Herman Lee Stewart Jan 18, 1932 - Feb 11, 2017 Herman Lee Stewart passed away peacefully Saturday Feb. 11, 2017 at his home in Modesto from Parkinson's Disease. He was 85. Born in Borger, TX, Herman came to California as a young boy, his family eventually settling in South Modesto. After graduating from Ceres High School in 1950, Herm enlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed in Greenland during the Korean War. Upon his return, he married his high school sweetheart, Pauline. They made their home in Livingston, CA while he completed his military service stationed at Castle AFB. Herm worked as a mechanic for Dow Hammond and it was during this time that he made a name for himself at Kingdom Speedway. His many, many trophies attest to his Drag Racing abilities. He moved his family to Sacramento where he earned his teaching degree and then settled in Ceres, Ca where he began his 35 year teaching career with Modesto City Schools. At this time, he continued his education and earned his Master's Degree in Arts & Education at Cal Poly by commuting from Ceres during the summer months. 33 years were spent at Mark Twain Junior High School teaching math, history, and English. After serving as the Dean of Students, he served as Vice Principal. He then returned to teaching his favorite subject, Physical Education. On any given field of play, he could be seen participating as the coach, or the referee or even the umpire. He truly loved sports of all kinds and, he, himself, played baseball and basketball for various city teams. He was also an avid water skier and a member of the Polar Bear Club. Mr. Stewart was always a student favorite and is beloved by many to this day. Whether as a father figure, or a confidant, or a mentor, he was always there for his students. He led by example and always offered support and encouragement. He truly was one of a kind and will be profoundly missed. Herman is survived by daughters, Sharilyn Borrelli of Modesto and Pamela Stewart of Ceres and long-time companion, Mary Patton of Ceres.  He is preceded in death by his son, David Stewart.  He also has five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
