In memory of
Helena J. (Mendoza) Pottorff
Helena J. (Mendoza) Pottorff January 13, 1934 - October 6, 2016 On January 13, 1934 Helena (Helen) was born to Rufino and Justina Mendoza of San Pedro, CA. She was born the second of four children who included older brother Ernesto, and younger siblings Evelyn and Robert. Helen completed her education attending Bandini Elementary, Dana Jr. High, and finishing at San Pedro High School in 1951. During a brief marriage she gave birth to one child, Jonathan (Jonny) in 1961. Helen was employed as a Data Processing Clerk with Los Angeles County. In 1964 she was introduced to Frank J. Gompert, a Lieutenant in the L.A. County Marshal's office and the gentleman that became the love of her life, with whom she would share over 54 very happy, memorable years with until his passing in December 2008. In December of 2015 Helen suffered a stroke that left her partially paralyzed and in need of constant life assistance. She was temporarily placed in the care Felicity Arcangeli and staff of Sunview Gardens Assisted Living Facility where she was cared for until the end of May when Helen was transferred into the care of her sister Evelyn who opened her home and heart, along with the loving assistance of Helen's nieces, Tammy Mansfield, Colleen McGarry and Teri Calderon. We wish to express our deepest heartfelt gratitude to her grandniece Jessica Ludeke who voluntarily offered to help Evelyn three times a day, 7 days a week to ensure Helen was provided with personalized care, including assistance with hygiene, dressing and transition from bed to wheelchair and back which allowed Helen to enjoy meals and conversation with family and friends on a daily basis. Helen absolutely adored Jessica and was extremely grateful for everything Jessica did to help her cope with her disability. Special thanks to her Nurse Christine Benitez who provided Helen with loving, individualized care and to whom we will always be forever grateful for her dedication to Helen and her needs and to the Staff members of Vitas Hospice, the agency responsible for providing medical equipment and supplies to help care for Helen. Helen is survived by her son, Jonathan (Jonny) Pottorff; sister, Evelyn (Mendoza) Morgan; brother, Robert Mendoza; numerous nieces and nephews and a large extended family in the South Bay. She is predeceased in life by her parents, Rufino (1961), Justina (1983); brother, Ernesto (2004) and most recently the love of her life, Frank J. Gompert (2008).
