Mrs. Helen Harvest Goode Black SPARTANBURG, SC-- Helen Harvest Goode Black was born on the third day of December in 1922 in Greenwood South Carolina; she was the oldest daughter of Robert and LueVinnia Mays Goode. She was the last living relative of Dr. Benjamin E. Mays in the Goode and Gilliam Family and the widow of Luther Black, Sr. Helen started attending Macedonia Baptist Church at the age of six and gave her life to God at the age of twelve. She became a Sunday School teacher at Macedonia and an active member of the Susie Joyce Circle of the Senior Missionary Society and served her church faithfully until her health declined. She leaves to mourn her loss: her children, Luther (Gloria) Black, Jr., Lovenia 'Kitty' Perkins, Bennie Lewis Black, Anthony George (Gizzelle) and Marvin Jerome Black. She was predeceased by daughter, Barbara Black Douglas and son, Gerald Kenneth Black. She was blessed with 17 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren and 13 great-great grandchildren (one deceased); and her aunt, Octavia Hill and other loving relatives and friends. Mrs. Helen Goode Black went home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on Friday, February 10, 2017. She was a true child of God and a major force in the lives of her family. A Celebration of the Life will be held Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at Macedonia Baptist Church at 3:00 p.m. The Rev. Dr. N. Keith McDaniel, Sr. will officiate. Interment will be in the Lincoln Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the home, 790 John B. White, Sr. Blvd., Spartanburg, SC. J.W Woodward Funeral Home
