Captain Heinz Sonnenfeld 84, of Cassadaga, Florida passed away Wednesday October 12, 2016 surrounded by his loving family. Heinz was born in Breslau Germany in 1932 immigrating with family to the United States in 1937 and became a US Citizen in 1944. He attended NYU majoring in Psychology prior to being drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War where he served within a unit assigned to Psychological Warfare. Upon honorable discharge from military service in 1954 Heinz successfully pursued what was to become a 27 year flying career as an airline pilot starting in 1959 working for Mohawk Airlines, Allegany Airlines and US Air retiring in 1986 with over 17,000 Flight Hours. Heinz attained and maintained his status as Captain for the last 24 years of his airline career that spanned the era of radial to jet powered aircraft holding Type Ratings for the DC-3, CV-240, CV-340, CV-440, Martin 404, Fairchild F227, BAC-111 and DC-9 aircraft. He enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, boating, fishing, RVing and working on all things mechanical or electrical. Heinz is survived by his soul mate and devoted wife of 56 years, Audrey Sonnenfeld, sons, Roger Sonnenfeld (Tura Schnebly), Mark (Tina) Sonnenfeld, Grandsons, Nathan Sonnenfeld, Shane Sonnenfeld. The family will receive friends for visitation from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday October 20th at Lankford Funeral Home DeLand. Private Burial will follow the next day at Greenwood Cemetery Eustis Florida.
