Haydn Lewis Gilmore
Haydn Lewis Gilmore of Hilltop Drive, Tunkhannock, died Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016, at home. He was born in Wilkes-Barre on Dec. 13, 1928, son of the late Haydn and Anna (Sylvanus) Gilmore. He was a graduate of West Pittston High School, received his bachelor's degree in philosophy at Temple University in 1950, Master of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1954, and Master of Arts in journalism from Syracuse University in 1970. He was ordained in 1955 and was Methodist pastor in Centermoreland before serving in the Air Force as chaplain for 10 years. He served as pastor of American Baptist churches in Lansford and Nesquehoning, held positions in public relations at Messiah College and community relations at Hospital Council NEPA, as well as manager of the French Azilum. He taught at Keystone College, Luzerne County Community College and Penn State extensions, before teaching English at Marywood University for more than 20 years. He was author of "Jog For Your Life" (Zondervan, 1974) and frequent contributor to Runner's Gazette. He was recipient of the Freedoms Foundation medal in 1967, and member of St. David's Society and Wyoming County Chorale. He was a beekeeper. He is survived by his second wife, Marlene; son and daughter-in-law, James and Beth, and grandchildren, Evan and Anna, Chesterland, Ohio; son, Dwight, Shaker Heights, Ohio; sister Maryanna, Sellersville; and sister, Rachel Sweterlitsch, Bethlehem. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016, at 10 a.m. from the Northmoreland Baptist Church, Ripplebrook Road, Tunkhannock, with the Rev. James May officiating. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Tamaqua at 2 p.m. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9 until time of service.
