In memory of
Harriett Hughes Marshall
Harriett Hughes Marshall 1932 - 2017 DOVER, N.H. - Harriett Hughes Marshall, of Cataract Avenue, died Feb. 10, 2017, at her home. She was born July 14, 1932, in Waterville, to Herbert and Esther (Hapworth) Lancaster and graduated cum laude from Waterville High School in 1951. She received a bachelor's degree in 1955 and a master's degree in 1965 from Gorham State Teachers College (now the University of Southern Maine). Harriett often said she was glad she went to college when she did and where she did, because it was there that she learned how to teach, not just subject matter but children. She always tried to be fair and sensitive to understanding the abilities and needs of each child. Her teaching positions were in the elementary schools of Yarmouth, Gorham and Wells; and in Portsmouth and Dover, N.H. She taught first grade at Woodman Park School for 26 years. Most of her former students will remember her as Mrs. Hughes. To Harriett, teaching was fun. She enjoyed reading and writing but not arithmetic. She belonged to the National Education Association and was secretary of the Seacoast Retired Teachers Association for several years. She truly liked keeping in touch with high school and college friends through snail-mail and by telephone. Sending cards for all occasions brought her much pleasure. People often commented that her middle name must be Hallmark. She was a life-time member of the Lakeside Advent Christian Campground located in North Belgrade, where she went every summer since early childhood. It was there, at a very young age, she met the love of her life, Robert F. Marshall, who later in life became her husband and her rock. Robert predeceased her in November 2010. She was a member of the Chelsea Advent Christian Church in Chelsea, and an associate member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Dover, N.H., where she was active in the ladies' group call WISH. Harriett was an ardent prayer warrior. Early in her life she learned "the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much," a quote from James 5:16 in her much-worn Bible. She firmly believed that God is powerful, He answers prayers, He keeps His promises and He changes people. After retirement in 1992, Harriett enjoyed working in the records room of the Dover Police Dept. as a senior volunteer. For 17 years she served as secretary/treasurer of the Visually Impaired People (VIP) Club, also helping with their transportation and arranging programs for their monthly meetings. She enjoyed Bible study and Christian fellowship with the King's Daughters and Sons, and at St. Johns. Harriett will live on in the memory of the many people whose lives she touched. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Robert F. Marshall; two brothers, Chester Bither and Warren Lancaster; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Sparrow Lancaster; her nephew, Steven H. Lancaster; and a sister, Evelyn Conley, of Bangor. Survivors include four nieces and one nephew: Nancy Traver of California; Sharon Blais and husband Denis, of New York; Laura Lea Lancaster, of Waterville; Patty Gilbert and husband Kenny, of Orrington; and Eugene Pomeroy and his wife Betty, of Howland. Also included are sister-in-law Flora Bither, of California; great-niece Stacy Robbins and her son Paul, of Waterville; and a very special cousin, Larry Hamilton and his wife Cheryl, of Newburgh. Harriett also is survived by her four dearly-loved "adopted" grandchildren: Joseph Bolobanic and daughters Madison and Annamaria; Nicole Bolobanic Rouleau and her daughter Jazmine and son Ethan; Spencer Bolobanic and his wife Melissa and son Wyatt; and Katie Bolobanic. There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Methodist Church Friday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the spring at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Waterville.
