Harold Swann, 86, passed away Thursday, January 12th, 2016 at Florida Hospital DeLand following a stroke. Harold is survived by his wife of 64 years, Valeria Swann; his children Steve, Todd, & Sonia; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, & close friends. Born in Alabama, the son of Alfred & Clara Swann, he was raised in DeLand by his Aunt & Uncle C.C. & Aileen Swann following the early death of his parents. Harold met Valeria, the love of his life, in high school. They were married in 1952, shortly before he began service in the US Navy aboard the aircraft carrier, the USS Essex, during the Korean War. Back from his time abroad, Harold & Valeria set out on life together raising their three children and working the family store, Todd's Grocery & Ice in Downtown DeLand. After the sale of store, Mr. Swann began a long and fulfilling career as Director of Transportation of the Volusia County School Board where he achieved many honors including: Lifetime Member of the National Association of Safety, President of Chamber of Commerce, & Award of Dedicated Service. Most important to Mr. Swann were his family and his faith. Mr. Swann was an Elder at Plymouth Avenue Christian Church, a founding Member of the Christian Church at DeLeon Springs, and a kind, wise, gentle, & caring influence to everyone that surrounded him. A graveside service will be held at Oakdale Cemetery Sunday, January 15th at 1PM.
