Harold R. Chappell Sr.
Harold R Chappell, Sr. Elizabeth City, NC - Harold Randal "Ranny" Chappell, Sr., 90, of Halls Creek Road, Elizabeth City, NC died Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center. He was born the youngest of ten children to the late William Clinton Chappell, Sr. and Helena Stryker Chappell in Norfolk, VA. He graduated from Portlock High School then served in the US Army in World War II being honorably discharged in 1946. He then attended William & Mary College and graduated with a degree in Commerce from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He began working in the emerging computer industry with various companies, Sperry Rand, Xerox Data Systems and Honeywell Information Systems. He retired from Honeywell after moving to Elizabeth City in 1978. His strong faith in his Lord and Savior was mentored by the late John Dearing, his pastor at Indian River Baptist Church where he served as Chairman of the Deacon Body, also at Del Amo Baptist Church in Los Angeles, CA and First Baptist Church in Roswell, Georgia. He graduated from the Golden Gate Seminary in California with a degree in Theology. He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School Teacher. Ever civic minded, he was a charter member and Past President of the Elizabeth City Morning Rotary, a Master Mason, Eureka Masonic Lodge #317 AF & AM, and a Shriner, Scottish Rites New Bern Consistory #3. In addition to his love of sixty-three years, Dorothy Nelms Chappell, he is survived by a daughter, Bridgette and husband Mike Dixon; a son, Hal and wife Susan Chappell all of Elizabeth City; grandchildren, Britney, Laura, Hunter, Hannah; and great grandchildren, Seth, Ben, Kendall, Jake, Candler and Sara Kate; several special nephews and nieces; and his canine companion Barnabus. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the ICU staff at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, October 15, 2016 at Twiford Memorial Chapel officiated by Rev. F. Joe Griffith. The family will receive friends following the service in the lobby of the funeral home.
