Gustavus Donnelly Sr.
Gustavus Latham Donnelly, Sr. of Mount Airy, NC died Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, NC following surgery. Born 8 August, 1940 at Duke Hospital in Durham, NC, he was the son of Grant L. Donnelly, MD and Estelle Fuller Donnelly. After graduating from Lee H. Edwards High School in Asheville, Gus attended The Citadel for 2 ½ years and graduated from UNC-CH with a degree in English. He completed two additional years in graduate school at UNC-CH, majoring in ancient history. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps, serving from October 1965 until honorably discharged February 1975 with the rank of Captain. He served in artillery units twice in Viet Nam. Among medals he received were the NDSM, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V device, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Bronze, and Bronze Star with Combat V device. He next entered Wake Forest University School of Law, graduated in 1978 and began practicing law in Mount Airy, NC. Gus was a skilled gunsmith, and historian, a talented poet and trumpet player. He was preceded in death by his parents and in 2015, son-in-law, Christopher DiNovi. He is survived by son G. Latham Donnelly, Jr. (Tanya) of Greensboro, NC, daughter Erin D. DiNovi of Ruther Glen, VA and two grandsons, Samuel and Jacob DiNovi of Ruther Glen. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn D. Blackman (Wilbert) of Salisbury, NC, nephew Trent Blackman (Elaine) of Concord, NC and niece Anne Blackman of Clemmons, NC. In addition he leaves Mt. Airy close friends and his paralegal assistant, Crystal Chaney (Chris). A memorial service was held July 23 at Franklin Heights United Methodist Church in Mount Airy, NC. with Rev. Dennis W. Cameron officiating. Interment with Military Honors at the National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC will be Friday, October 14 at 10:00 AM, with Rev. Margaret Almeida, Second Presbyterian Church, conducting the service.
