In memory of
Grace Elizabeth Arnold Joslyn
Grace Elizabeth Arnold Joslyn 1915 ~ 2017 Grace Elizabeth Arnold, our beloved mother and grandmother, died at home January 3, 2017 with her family at her side. She was born 101 years ago in Boise, Idaho on October 9, 1915 to Deane Collier Arnold and Alice Tucker Arnold. She loved to share memories of her childhood in Boise and her school friends. Grace graduated from Boise High School in 1933 where she had excelled in both athletics and academics. She then enrolled in Boise Junior College during its second year of existence. She went on to earn her credentials as a Registered Nurse from St. Luke's Hospital. She married her high school sweetheart, Charles Wilder Joslyn, in 1939. Charles enlisted in the Army in 1941 and they were stationed in California and Texas during WWII. When the war ended they returned to Boise where they built a successful lithography business which later became Joslyn and Associates, Inc. Charles and Grace had three children; Carol, Spencer and Charlotte who also grew up in Boise. She was a lifelong member of First Congregational Church in Boise. Grace has always loved nature. She could identify most birds and wildflowers found in Southern Idaho. She learned to paint with water colors and created scenes depicting nature and the Sawtooth mountains in Idaho where she and her family built a cabin. She earned a pilot's license in order to act as copilot for her husband, Charles, when his health was declining. She traveled widely in North America and toured Europe, North Africa, Tahiti, New Zealand and Australia. After she was widowed, she spent 20 contented years traveling, and painting. Then at the age of 85 Grace met Richard Button, who proved to be a great love match for her. They married and spent six very happy years sharing their joy of life with family and friends. Her longevity may be attributed to positive thinking, resilience, tolerance, kindness, determination, care and concern for others. She never shied away from hard work. She was warm and gracious; slow to anger and quick to forget missteps by others. Grace was preceded in death by her parents; her older brothers, Charles Richard (Dick) and Donald Cutler; her husbands, Charles Joslyn and Richard Button; and by her two younger children. Grace is survived by her youngest brother, William Edward (Bill) Arnold and her oldest daughter, as well as nine grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and other extended family. She is fondly remembered and greatly missed. A celebration of her life will be held Friday, January 27, 2017 at First Congregational Church, 2201 Woodlawn Avenue in Boise at 3:00 pm in the afternoon. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family on Grace's memorial webpage at www.summersfuneral.com .
